FAQs
Do you only work with dogs?
Our therapists are certified in small animal massage therapy, and while we both primarily work with dogs, Quimby also sees the occasional cat, and welcomes both.
Why do you need to contact my vet?
The Oregon Veterinary Practice Act requires animal massage therapists obtain a veterinary referral before proceeding with massage. ResQ Animal Massage complies with these standards and will reach out to your veterinarian to secure the referral.
What do I do to prepare for my pet’s massage?
All that is needed for your pet's massage is a quiet area and whatever bed/blanket they prefer to lay on – basically, wherever they are most comfortable. Giving your pet an opportunity to exercise and potty beforehand is most helpful. We also recommend not feeding them a large meal prior to their massage.
What should I expect during and after my pet’s massage?
Every animal is different and their responses to massage vary. Some settle in quickly while others need time to acclimate to the process. They may move around and reposition themselves, take frequent breaks, get water, or even need a potty break during their massage. It's part of the process. We never push an animal and we watch your pet's feedback throughout the session. Our goal is to build trust and make their experience a positive one.
Massage moves stagnant fluids and increases blood flow to the muscles. As a result, some animals may experience mild discomfort or drowsiness the following day or two but it shouldn’t linger beyond that. Sometimes these side effects don't occur, especially if your pet receives regular bodywork. Hydration helps, so please make sure there is plenty of fresh water for them as they may want to drink more after their massage. Some animals are energized after their session and others are deeply relaxed and will sleep.
How often should my dog get massaged?
How often an animal is massaged depends on his or her individual needs. We will follow up with you via email after your pet's first appointment and will attach a copy of their SOAP chart. The SOAP chart will detail our assessment, what the session focused on and what is recommended moving forward. We keep notes on each session thereafter and will follow up with you within 24-48 hours to see how your pet is feeling. Your feedback is helpful in determining how your pet is responding to massage and whether or not we need to make adjustments to their plan.
Can you tell me what’s wrong with my dog?
Animal massage therapists cannot diagnose, prescribe treatment or determine the prognosis of a condition. Massage is not a substitute for veterinary care, pharmaceutical management or physical therapy. If you have a concern about your pet’s health please see your vet first.
What is your cancellation policy?
In order to serve clients across the metro area and maximize travel efficiency, we have a carefully planned schedule that makes late cancellations very difficult to fill on short notice. A $50 fee will be charged for cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance, and a $75 fee will be charged for no-shows and same day cancellations.
